You can feel fine and still be injured

This is the part most people don’t expect: after a car accident, adrenaline masks pain. It is common to walk away from a collision feeling shaken but otherwise okay, and then wake up two or three days later with a stiff neck, a headache that won’t quit, or an ache between the shoulder blades.

That delay doesn’t mean the injury is minor. It means the soft tissue damage — the ligaments, discs, and muscles that hold your neck and spine in place — is only now becoming symptomatic as inflammation sets in.

Whiplash injuries also happen at speeds far lower than people assume. Your car can look barely scratched while your head has still been thrown forward and back faster than your neck muscles can brace for.

Symptoms worth getting checked

• Neck pain or stiffness
• Headaches, especially at the base of the skull
• Pain between the shoulder blades
• Lower back pain
• Dizziness or trouble concentrating
• Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
• Jaw pain or difficulty opening your mouth fully
• Trouble sleeping, or waking up stiff
• Fatigue that isn’t explained by anything else

If you’re experiencing any of these after a collision, get evaluated. Waiting rarely makes soft tissue injuries easier to treat.

Important: If you have severe head pain, loss of consciousness, vision changes, confusion, weakness in an arm or leg, or loss of bladder or bowel control, go to an emergency room or urgent care first. Those need to be ruled out before chiropractic care begins.

What your first visit looks like

You don’t need to arrive with paperwork figured out. Bring your insurance claim number if you have one, and we’ll handle the rest.

Consultation. We’ll talk through the collision — what direction you were hit from, whether you saw it coming, whether your head hit anything, what you’ve felt since. These details genuinely change what we look for.

Examination. A physical exam of your spine, range of motion, reflexes, and neurological function to identify what’s actually been injured.

Imaging if it’s warranted. X-rays when the exam indicates them, and a referral for advanced imaging if something suggests we need it.

A plan you understand. We’ll explain what we found, what treatment we recommend, roughly how long it should take, and what you can do at home. If we don’t think chiropractic care is the right answer for your injury, we’ll tell you that and help you find who is.

Documentation. We keep thorough records from day one. If you end up filing an injury claim later, that documentation matters a great deal — and gaps in early treatment are the first thing an insurance adjuster looks for.

How auto injury care gets paid for in Washington

Most patients are surprised by how much coverage they already have.

PIP — Personal Injury Protection. In Washington, auto insurers are required to offer PIP coverage of at least $10,000 per person, and drivers must decline it in writing. That means many people carry it without realizing it. Check your policy declarations page, or call your insurer and ask.

Here’s what makes PIP unusual compared to regular health insurance:

• It’s no-fault. It pays regardless of who caused the accident.
• No deductible, no copay. Covered medical expenses are typically paid at 100% up to your policy limit.
• It covers chiropractic care, along with exams, imaging, and often massage therapy.
• It covers passengers. Each person in the vehicle generally has their own limit.
• It can apply even if you weren’t in a car — pedestrians and cyclists struck by a vehicle may be covered.
• Benefits generally apply to treatment received within three years of the accident date.

You do not need a referral. In Washington you have the right to choose your own provider for care covered under PIP. You can call us directly and start.

If you don’t have PIP, we’ll talk through your options. Depending on your situation, that may mean billing the at-fault driver’s insurance, or — if you’re working with an attorney — arranging a letter of protection so treatment can begin now and be paid from a settlement when your case resolves. Self-pay arrangements are also available.

Common questions

How soon after an accident should I be seen?

As soon as you’re able. Early evaluation catches injuries before they become chronic, and it establishes a clear record connecting your symptoms to the collision.

Will using my PIP raise my premiums?

In Washington, insurers are prohibited from raising your rates solely because you used your PIP benefits.

I already saw a doctor at the ER. Do I still need this?

Emergency rooms rule out fractures and life-threatening injuries — that’s their job, and it’s important. They generally don’t treat the soft tissue injuries that cause lingering neck pain, headaches, and stiffness. Many patients are cleared at the ER and still need follow-up care.

My accident was months ago. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. PIP benefits generally cover treatment for up to three years from the accident date, and older injuries are still very treatable. Call and we’ll talk it through.

What if I was at fault?

PIP is no-fault coverage. It applies either way.
