You choose your provider — not your employer

This is the single thing most injured workers don’t know.

After a workplace injury, your employer may offer to send you to their occupational medicine clinic or a company doctor. You are not required to go. In Washington, the injured worker selects their own attending provider.

It’s fine to tell your employer you appreciate the offer and that you’ll be seeing your own provider. That’s your right, and exercising it doesn’t affect your claim.

What L&I actually is

Most states make employers buy workers’ compensation from private insurance companies. Washington doesn’t. Here, the Department of Labor and Industries runs the system directly as a state fund.

Some larger employers are self-insured instead, meaning they pay claims themselves rather than through the state fund. Either way, the process for you is broadly similar and you still choose your own attending provider.

What an accepted claim covers:

  • Medical treatment for your accepted injury — with no copay, no deductible, and no bill to you
  • Chiropractic care as your primary treatment
  • Massage therapy, when it’s prescribed as part of your treatment plan
  • Diagnostic imaging when it’s warranted
  • Time-loss compensation if your injury keeps you off work
  • Referrals to specialists when needed

Massage therapy is covered too — here’s how it works

A lot of injured workers don’t realize massage therapy can be part of an L&I claim. It can, and we offer it in the same office.

There’s an important distinction, though, and it’s worth understanding before your first visit.

L&I covers massage as prescribed treatment for your accepted injury — not as general wellness or relaxation massage. That means:

  • Your attending provider has to prescribe it specifically as part of your treatment plan
  • It has to be aimed at the accepted condition on your claim
  • Authorization comes in blocks of visits rather than open-ended, and continuing it requires progress reports showing you’re improving

In practice, this is straightforward when it’s clinically appropriate — soft tissue work alongside chiropractic care is a normal combination for the strains, sprains, and repetitive-use injuries that make up most work claims.

Because Dr. Gill can serve as your attending provider and we have a licensed massage practitioner in the same office, the prescription, the treatment, and the reporting all happen in one place. You’re not chasing a referral to an outside clinic or waiting on paperwork to move between offices.

Already have a prescription for massage? Just call.

If your physician has already written you a prescription for massage therapy on your L&I claim, you don’t need to see Dr. Gill first. Call us at 425-228-2225 with your claim number and your prescription, and we’ll get you on the schedule.

Don’t have a prescription yet? Dr. Gill can examine you and request massage authorization from L&I on your behalf. That’s a routine part of what an attending provider does, and it means you can get everything handled in one place instead of going back to another office for paperwork.

One honest note: if massage isn’t clinically indicated for your particular injury, we’ll say so rather than prescribe it. Treatment that isn’t supported by your documented condition tends to get denied, and it doesn’t help your claim.

What to do after a work injury

1. Report it to your employer. Do this as soon as you can. Delay is one of the most common reasons claims get challenged.

2. Get evaluated. For anything severe — head injury, loss of consciousness, a suspected fracture, severe bleeding — go to an emergency room first. For strains, sprains, back and neck injuries, and the kind of damage that builds up over time, come see us.

3. File the claim at your first visit. You don’t need to have done any paperwork in advance. We complete the Report of Accident with you at your first appointment and file it. That’s what opens your claim.

4. Keep every appointment. Gaps in treatment are the first thing a claim manager looks at when deciding whether an injury is as significant as reported.

Work injuries we treat

Workplace injuries fall into two rough categories, and both are treatable.

Sudden injuries — a lift gone wrong, a slip on a wet floor, a fall from a ladder, being struck by equipment, a vehicle collision while driving for work.

Injuries that build up over time — the ones that are harder to pinpoint but just as real:

  • Lower back pain from repeated lifting or bending
  • Neck and shoulder pain from overhead work
  • Repetitive strain from assembly, packing, or keyboard work
  • Knee and hip pain from long hours standing on concrete
  • Pain from prolonged awkward postures in cramped spaces

If you can’t name a single moment when it started, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a claim. Occupational conditions that develop gradually are covered too.

Hurt in a collision while working? If you were driving for work when the crash happened, you may have both an L&I claim and an auto insurance claim running at once. That’s more common than people expect — delivery drivers, sales reps, home health staff, and anyone who drives between job sites. We treat both, and we can help you understand which claim covers what. See our auto accident and whiplash injury care page for how the motor vehicle side works.

What your first visit looks like

We complete your claim paperwork. Bring your claim number if you already have one. If you don’t, we’ll file the Report of Accident with you.

Consultation. How the injury happened, what your job actually involves physically, what you’ve felt since, and what you’ve tried already.

Examination. Spine, range of motion, reflexes, neurological function, and the specific structures your job puts under load.

Imaging if it’s warranted. X-rays when the exam indicates them, and referral for advanced imaging when something suggests we need it.

A treatment plan and a work-status opinion. We’ll explain what we found, what treatment we recommend, and give an honest opinion about your ability to work — whether that’s full duty, modified duty, or time off.

Ongoing reporting to L&I. Your attending provider documents your progress and communicates with your claim manager throughout. We handle that.

Why choose Premier Chiropractic Renton

Approved L&I provider. Dr. Gill is in Washington’s Medical Provider Network and can serve as the attending provider on your claim — managing your treatment, certifying your work status, and reporting to your claim manager.

Over 20 years in practice — 15 of them right here in Renton. Dr. Gill has been treating patients for more than two decades and has served the Renton and Fairwood community for the last fifteen years.

We handle the L&I paperwork. The Report of Accident, progress reports, work-status forms, and communication with your claim manager. You have enough to deal with.

Everything under one roof. Chiropractic care, massage therapy, physiotherapy, and corrective exercises — coordinated in one office rather than scattered across referrals.

Honest work-status opinions. We won’t hold you back from work you’re able to do, and we won’t clear you for work that will re-injure you. Both of those hurt you in the end.

We work with attorneys when needed. If your claim becomes contested, we provide the documentation your attorney will need.

Common questions

Does this cost me anything?

On an accepted claim, covered treatment for your accepted condition is paid through the claim. No copay, no deductible, no bill to you.

My employer wants me to see their doctor. Do I have to?

No. You choose your own attending provider in Washington. Your employer can offer, but the choice is yours.

Can I get massage therapy on my L&I claim?

Yes, when it’s prescribed as part of your treatment plan for the accepted injury. It’s covered as treatment rather than as general wellness massage, and authorization comes in blocks of visits with progress reporting in between. We have a licensed massage practitioner in the same office, so it’s coordinated with the rest of your care.

I already started treatment somewhere else. Can I switch?

Generally yes — injured workers can change attending providers, though transfers need to be reported and approved. Call us and we’ll walk you through it.

I didn’t report it right away. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. Report it to your employer now and get evaluated. Delay makes a claim harder to establish, but it doesn’t automatically end it.

What if my claim gets denied?

Denials can be protested, and there are strict deadlines for doing so — read any decision letter carefully and note the date. Thorough medical documentation is central to a successful protest, which is one reason consistent treatment records matter.

My employer is self-insured. Does that change anything?

The claim is administered by your employer or their third-party administrator rather than the state fund, but you still choose your own attending provider.
